CGNK celebrates International Day of Nonviolence
October 2009. This year, the Center for Global Nonkilling will celebrate the International Day of Nonviolence in Honolulu, Hawai'i, following an invitation of Dr. Raj Kumar, founder president of the Gandhi International Institute for Peace.
Global Nonkilling Leadership Academy starts in October
September 2009. The Center for Global Nonkilling will be conducing its First Global Nonkilling Leadership Academy pilot in Honolulu, October 4-16. The Academy is intended to provide a select group of promising young leaders (from different fields, faiths, races, continents and backgrounds) a life changing experience related to the real and much needed possibilities of a world where killing is no longer taken for granted.
DR Congo Nonkilling School Starts New Year
September 2009. The “Glenn Paige Nonkilling School” in DR Congo, managed by local nonprofit MLECI, started its 2009/2010 school year on September 21, with 232 school children divided into 6 classes. (1st, 2nd and 3rd Nursing school and 1st, 2nd and 3rd elementary school). A new “Nonkilling Society” subject and English language have been introduced this year.
CGNK invited to 10th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates
September 2009. The Center for Global Nonkilling received an invitation to participate in the 10th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates that will be held in November at Berlin Town Hall on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. This Summit’s topic: “Breaking down new walls to ensure a world of human rights and a world without violence” is presented as an opportunity to raise and discuss the issues of the new “walls”: physical, political, economical, environmental and other.
New CGNK publications launched on International Peace Day
September 2009. The Center for Global Nonkilling presented two new publications celebrating the September 21st International Peace Day: “Toward a Nonkilling Paradigm” and a re-edition of the World Health Organization’s “World Report on Violence and Health”.
Movement for a Nonkilling Philippines to be launched in October
September 2009. The Movement for a Nonkilling Philippines will be formally launched on October 6, 2009, with the stated goal of “bringing about a life-sustaining and nonkilling Philippines.” The Movement has 16 convenors representing over a dozen Filipino organizations and is headed by its Lead Convenor Jose V. Abueva, CGNK Governing Council member.
Nonkilling Discussed in Medellín, Colombia
September 2009. The Center for Global Nonkilling is a co-sponsor of the "Somos Paz" ("We Are Peace") Week that will be held in Medellín, Colombia, from September 20-27. Medellín is Colombia's second largest city and has historically suffered from high levels of violence due to gang activities, internal displacement, drug cartels and military, guerrilla and paramilitary operations.
WHO invites CGNK to Geneva Meeting on Violence Prevention
September 2009. The World Health Organization has invited CGNK Co-Directors Karen Cross and Greg Bourne to attend the Fourth Milestones of a Global Campaign for Violence Prevention Meeting: "Boosting global violence prevention." The meeting will be held at WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, on 17-18 September 2009, with attendees from all over the world.
Nonkilling Hawai'i Advisory Council holds its Second Meeting
September 2009. The Nonkilling Hawai'i Advisory Council had its second meeting in Honolulu August 29. Members came from diverse sectors of the community: Native Hawaiian activists and educators, health care professionals, domestic violence and suicide prevention specialists, inter-faith, security, business, and tourism representatives.
Nonkilling at Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies Conference
August 2009. The Open Space Session "Are Global Dignity, Humiliation-Free, Nonkilling Societies Possible?" took place on the first day of the 13th Annual Conference of Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies, held in Hawai’i from August 20th to 23rd. The session’s title is linked to the overarching conference theme "World Peace through Humiliation-Free Global Human Interactions".
