  • Nonkilling Island Communities Analyzed in Madeira

    July 2010. CGNK Research Leader Joám Evans Pim will be presenting a paper with the title "Peaceful Islands: Insular Communities as Nonkilling Societies," at the International Conference on Islands “The Islands of the World and the World of Islands”, July 26-30, following an invitation from the Center for the Study of Atlantic History, a public research institution of the Regional Government of Madeira, Portugal.

    Nonkilling Anti-terrorism Workshops Through Art in India

    July 2010. The Shanti Sena Training Centre, Trivandrum, Kerala, India (attached to the Indian Council of Gandhian Studies) has initiated a series of nonkilling anti-terrorism workshops through paintings, organized by the renowned artist Ignatious Xavier Joseph. The programme began on July 17 in and around Thiruvananthapuram under the guidance of CGNK Honorary Sponsor Dr. N. Radhakrishnan as part of the Nonkilling Violence-free India Campaign.

    Italian Translation of Nonkilling Global Political Science Now Available

    July 2010. The Italian edition of Nonkilling Global Political Science, by Glenn D. Paige, is now available for purchase through EMI's (Editrice Missionaria Italiana) website. A preview presentation of Nonuccidere: Una nueva scienza politica globale was held in Rome last month during the World Health Organization's Violence Prevention Alliance Annual Meeting, with copies offered to the Italian Health Ministry and the WHO European Regional Office in Rome.

    WHO Violence Prevention Alliance Meets in Rome

    June 2010. The Center for Global Nonkilling participated on June 3-4 in the Violence Prevention Alliance (VPA) Annual Meeting, organized in Rome by the World Health Organization. A total of 49 participants representing 26 VPA organizations and six observer organizations discussed a new Conceptual Framework for the Alliance, including a new structure and organization for the enlarged VPA, a 2011-2015 Strategy and Work Plan, and a revision and establishment of new VPA working groups.

    CGNK at World Education Forum Preparatory Meeting

    June 2010. CGNK leadership team member Joám Evans Pim participated in the fifth and final meeting of the 2010 World Education Forum Organizing Committee. The meeting was chaired by former UNESCO General Secretary-General and CGNK Honorary sponsor Federico Mayor Zaragoza at Santiago de Compostela, Galiza, at one of the venues that will hold the Forum itself in December.

    Second Interdisciplinary Exploratory Seminar on Nonkilling Research Held in Honolulu

    May 2010. On Friday, May 7, 2010 the Interdisciplinary Exploratory Seminar on Nonkilling Research met in Honolulu. After reviewing the updates on CGNK activities since the last meeting, a general discussion took place which included the following: Biennial Peace Research Meetings like the International Peace Research Association (IPRA) would be good forums for nonkilling to be in on a regular basis. Another member noted that he was interested in improving the community we live in. He urged attention to civil unions, rights deprivation, and jail suicides.

    Nonkilling Haiti Exploratory Program Held in Port-au-Prince and Jacmel

    May 2010. In May 12-19 the Center for Global Nonkilling completed a "Week of Reflections on the Reconstruction of Haiti, the Sarvodaya Approach and Efforts Toward a Nonviolent, Killing Free Haitian Future" in Port au Prince and Jacmel, Haiti.

    Month-long Nonkilling Summer Camp for Children in India

    May 2010. The Shanti Sena Training Centre, Trivandrum, Kerala, India (attached to the Indian Council of Gandhian Studies) and the Rangaprabhat Children’s Theatre partnered in a unique month-long nonkilling summer programme for 120 children from different parts of Kerala. The programme began on April 4 at the Rangaprabhat Chidren’s Theatre and was inaugurated by CGNK Honorary Sponsor Dr. N. Radhakrishnan in the presence of distinguished social activists, teachers, artists, journalists, parents and others.

    2009 Nonkilling Monitoring Report Released

    May 2010. During 2009, CGNK established a network of nonkilling correspondents, or monitors, in several countries around the world. This report describes the program, the major advances in nonkilling initiatives being tracked in various countries, and some general trends compiled from the observations of monitors. Expansion and refinement of the program is envisioned in 2010. Read the full report.

    Nonkilling Hawai`i Advisory Council Meets

    April 2010. On April 9, the Nonkilling Hawai`i Advisory Council met at Unity Church of Hawai`i, for the thrid time since its establishment in 2009. In attendance were: Ha'aheo Guanson, Keith Haugen, Nanci Kreidman, Glenn D. Paige, Glenda Paige, Rebecca Shor, M. Kalani Souza, Olivier Urbain, Kerrie Urosevich, Karen Cross and Katherine Li.
