Can Nonkilling be researched/applied/probed in Depth? Yes! 5 reasons why, by Francisco Gomes de Matos
In my talks and workshops on Nonkilling applied to Linguistics I'm being asked this question more and more frequently: Can NONKILLING be researched in depth? Can it be applied in the deepest sense? Why?
Here are five of the reflections I have been sharing with participants in my interactions. You are asked to add to the list and to justify your additions.
YES, NONKILLING CAN BE applied, researched, probed in DEPTH. Why?
5 reasons why:
1.NONKILLING is a concept closely related to PEACE and NONVIOLENCE. In fact, it is the most recent conceptual development in the PEACE + NONVIOLENCE CONTINUUM of HUMAN(ization). As such, NONKILLING is a powerful reminder to all human beings that NONKILLING -- NOT TO KILL -- is one of our most serious responsabilities as planetary citizens who affirm, appreciate, promote, protect, support, sustain LIFE on Earth. The specificity of the NONKILLING concept helps us walk on the LIFE-HUMANIZING CONTINUUM and thus perceive the formidable challenges facing every responsible human being.
2. NONKILLING is multidimensional. A look at the Table of Contents of the pioneering volume TOWARDS A NONKILLING PARADIGM, edited by Joam Evans Pim (Center for Global Nonkilling, 2009) shows how 14 areas of human knowledge can be related to NONKILLING is deeply revealing ways. Imagine that list being exponentially expanded, so as to cover most domains of human knowledge, in the perspective of Nonkilling. So many theoretical and applied advances would be made on the study of NONKILLING.
3. NONKILLING is especially applicable to PROFESSIONS, to PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES, as can be seen from the examples provided by Francisco Gomes de Matos (Filmmakers for nonkilling, Educators for Nonkilling, etc) in his book Nurturing Nonkilling: a Poetic Plantation (3rd ed., CGNK, 2010). The list of professions-professional activities-occupations is almost endless and so is the indispensable presence of NONKILLING in such human ways of working.
4. NONKILLING can be inspiring to other global initiatives which share the goal of helping Humankind act, interact peacefully, nonviolently, NONKILLINGLY. So many organizations, at national, regional, international levels can benefit from the insights and applications of NONKILLING. You can contribute to that organizational list, by looking for what is shared by the NONKILLING model (as expressed by its formulator, GlENN D. PAIGE in his pioneeringly inspiring NONKILLING GLOBAL POLITICAL SCIENCE) and other developing frameworks across cultures.
5. As the history of Humankind unfolds, goes on, the need for a globally shared spirit of peaceful solidarity will increase. Correspondingly, attention to Nonkilling will grow, as Nonkilling becomes not only an academically acknowledged field but as a global policy of avoiding, preventing, and reducing violent, lethal actions all over the world. This fifth reason for NONKILLING will impact on the way human beings reducate themselves as NONKILLERS, that is, beings imbued with the ultimate human right: that of PEACE, as realized nonviolently and nonkillingly.
That's it, for now. Please contribute to these reflections.
